About Us


A Right Understanding Mediation Service provides mediation services to help resolve issues arising from the breakdown of a relationship. We will help you resolve parenting plans (custody and access), support (both child and spousal) and division of property problems by providing a safe forum to discuss these issues and reach agreement. With our knowledge and mediation skills we will help you reach a right understanding between each other.

Since 1978, Andrew Thomson has been assisting people resolve disuputes through the court process. He has, using his negotiation skills, assisted clients to achieve satisfactory outcomes. Now, using his extensive knowledge of the law relating to family issues and the skills he has practiced for 37 years, he is able to assist persons resolve their family disputes without the additional stress and expense of the court process.

Since 1993 Sandra Thomson has worked with young children and their parents as an educator. With the experience of five children of her own and the hundreds of children she has taught over 25 years she understands the needs of children. With her mediation skills, she is able to assist parents to develop a parenting plan which is focused upon the best interest of children.

Andrew Thomson graduated in 1973 with an Honours Bachelor of Arts from WLU and in 1976 with a Bachelor of Law from Western. He was called to the Bar in 1978 and has been a litigator since. 75% of his legal practice has been in family law, the balance in the civil and criminal fields. He has a broad family law experience and has appeared in all levels of the courts in Ontario.

Andrew received his mediation training from The Mediation Centre in Barrie where he interned. He subsequently received his designation as an accredited mediator from the Ontario Association for Family Mediation.

He and his wife have 5 children and 7 grandchildren.

Sandra Thomson


Sandra Thomson received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Sociology in 1972 from the University of Waterloo. She graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1974 with a teaching degree and subsequently taught for the Dufferin, London, and Waterloo Boards of Education.

After Andrew and Sandra moved to Parry Sound thirty years ago, they started a family. When she returned to her teaching career, she was hired by the Near North District School Board. She taught grades JK, SK, 1, 3, 4, and 5 and retired in 2013 after 25 successful and rewarding years.

Sandra received her mediation training from The Mediation Centre in Barrie and is an associate member of the Ontario Association for Family Mediation.
